6 simple steps to transforming your furniture

    1. Start by preparing your surface. Sand the wood until it is smooth and remove any dust or debris.

To sand your wood down to the bare surface, you will need to start with a rough grit sandpaper and work your way up to a fine grit. Begin by sanding the wood with a grit of 80 or 100 to remove any rough or uneven areas. Then, switch to a grit of 150 or 180 and sand the wood again, focusing on smooth out the surface and remove any remaining imperfections. As you sand, be sure to work in the direction of the grain to avoid damaging the wood. When you are finished, use a clean, dry cloth to remove any dust or debris from the surface.

    2. If you are using the Stain and Finishing Oil to add color to your wood, choose a color that you like and stir the can well with a popsicle stick or paint stick.

    3. Using a workshop brush, apply the Stain and Finishing Oil to your surface. Sometimes we pour it on to the surface and use the workshop brush to spread it around.   Don't be afraid to add a little extra, it will saturate into your wood.

    4. Let your product sit on your surface and absorb into your wood.  The open time of Fusion Mineral Paint's Stain and Finishing Oil is about 20 minutes, depending on the humidity and temperature of your workspace. This means that you will have about 20 minutes to apply the oil, work it into the wood, and achieve the desired level of color or grain enhancement before it begins to dry. Once the oil has started to dry, it will be more difficult to manipulate.

We suggest wiping back a test patch 5 minutes after your product has been sitting on your surface.  This will help you gage the colour and if it the look you are trying to achieve.

    5. Use an Applicator Pad to remove excess Stain from the surface.  We find these work best as they provide you a flat and even tool to remove the Stain and Finishing Oil.  Use your Applicator Pad in one direction and working all the way across your project.  Wipe your surface and remove your stain.

    6. Once you have removed all your Stain and Finishing Oil, let your project dry for approximately 24 hours before touching it.  This time varies depending on the humidity and temperature of your workspace.
